My 25 Years of Ed Tech

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Diversity University started out as an educational MUD; Walden University was also an early adopter, and a whole bunch more. My contributions included this effort in learning design. 1998 – Wikis Also: CMSs, RSS I didn't bother with Wikis. Instead, for me, 1998 was the year of RSS and content syndication. I did a lot of work with RSS, combining it with content management systems (CMS). Anyhow, I document many uses of learning analytics here.

iPad & eBooks: A Game Changer for Blended Learning

Xyleme

There have been countless blog posts about the theoretical potential of the iPad on mainstream media, most notably eBooks, so it was nice to see a real-world example of static content and video done in a way that equals, and even improves upon, the quality and design of the magazine layout.

Five Myths of Social Learning

Xyleme

Social learning is bi-directional and user-generated content and feedback can be a valuable asset for instructional designers to develop more compelling and timely learning, whether that learning is published to a formal course, a non-formal podcast, or an informal blog. So while implementing social media tools provided by an LCMS or LMS vendor may ensure departmental adoption, experience and today’s market show us that enterprise adoption of these tools is not a likely reality.

Photo of Andrew McAfee Home Blog About RSS Andrew McAfees Blog The Business Impact of IT Tweet Should Knowledge Workers have E2.0 Many of the comments I received relate to the eternal debate over optimal incentive design, and whether it’s desirable (or even possible) to measure and reward effort vs. activities vs. outcomes. We’re working with a couple of major customers on using social analytics ( [link] ) provided by our Harvest Report Server product to measure E2.0

Connective Knowledge and Open Resources

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

We had about 170 blogs created to support the course, and we aggregated these using RSS – content syndication supporting online learning. The difference is that a cMOOC is designed as a network, as I described above, while an xMOOC is based on a central course site and content that will be followed by all students. That’s why it’s important to have a mechanism – like RSS – to link different websites together.

E-Learning Generations

Another key idea was the design of the gaming space itself.Early computer games (and many early arcade games) were designed likeprogrammed learning: they were like a flow chart, guiding you through a seriesof choices to a predetermined conclusion. To this day, the learningmanagement system is designed essentially to present content and supportdiscussion and activities around that content.

Beyond Institutions Personal Learning in a Networked World

Thinking in Models: for Design, for Learning… A large part of this talk is about that change. We''re told there will be analytics and data-driven management. When you look at that, basically it''s like they have this model or design in their head of how we could rebuild the university system, wipe it all out, start over, and we''ll have a new model. Models of how to do learning, learning design patterns: Grainne Conole has done a lot on this.
