Complexity in Human Systems

Dave Snowden

As complexity theory has started to get traction I’ve had three concerns. Secondly to distinguish work on complexity in human systems from that based on non-human systems (although again there is much of value). Thirdly to prevent complexity becoming a single guru movement or movements.

Cynefin St Davids Day 2019 (2 of 5)

Dave Snowden

In the post I want to look at the different types of practice or knowledge use in each domain and explain why I changed ‘Emergent Practice’ to ‘Exaptive discovery” in the complex domain and added the stress condition to Novely in the Chaotic Domain.

Two technologies — machine learning , and the internet — are changing our understanding of the world by showing that we really cannot understand large scale complexity. “We don’t use these technologies because they are huge, connected, and complex. Complexity

As machine predictions become inexpensive and commonplace, the human judgement that leverages and complements prediction will become more valuable, especially given the increasing complexity of the decisions our institutions are called upon to make. “It’s

complex networks of trust

Harold Jarche

Only global networks of trust can work on this complex problem. The world is too complex for elites and hierarchies. What is innovation? — it is not so much about having ideas as it is about connecting and nurturing ideas.

Key to Cynefin is the idea that three ontological states or order, complexity and chaos are subject to phase shift boundaries. The domain shifts between the ordered and complex domains and between those of complexity and chaos are generally matters of choice and with choice come consequences.
