Ning cancels “free”

George Siemens

Big news today from Ning: no more free networks (and 40% staff layoffs). Many educators use Ning for creating social networks. But, for Ning, ad revenue has not been able to meet their financial needs. If you decide not to host your own site, at least make sure you can own and export your own data on your terms.

Is this intentional, Ning? Is it ethical?

Jay Cross

expected Ning to close it when they went to pay-to-play. After all, their site says: Deadline for Selecting a Ning Plan Has Passed. We are no longer offering or supporting free Ning Networks. If you haven’t selected a plan for your free Ning Network, you can no longer access the network. And unprofessional.

Free Ning Applications

Today, Ning made a bunch of free apps available for download. Mouse over Add-ons to see the new apps. Thanks.

I don’t normally wholly post others blog posts, but I think spreading the word about alternatives to NING , which will be ending its free service, is a useful thing. So thanks for Stephen for putting this together. I had collected a few more, but I’ll add them to the Alternatives to Ning GoogleDoc! An Alternatives to Ning.

Keep your social media in perpetual Beta

Harold Jarche

Ning started by giving out spaces for free and there were many other variations on that theme. Tweet When I started blogging, it was one of the few options to share ideas on the Net. After blogs, the next big phenomena were social networks. Twitter is where you can feel the pulse of the action and are able to follow the most conversations.

Forums vs. Social Networks?

Clark Quinn

Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. I'm debating the value of forum / group / threaded discussion software vs. social network software for a particular situation. It aims at a very broad audience that includes everyone from early adopters to technology laggards. They could also do it as comments on a blog. Options are simple.

As we are wrapping up the week for Learn Trends , one of the questions we faced was what to do with the Ning community that sprung up to support the conference. The way he pronounces his surname “aOkes&# (with a tiny long a in front) and calls NPR’s early show “Mo-ar-ning Edition&# sounds Southern to me.
