Is this intentional, Ning? Is it ethical?
SEPTEMBER 6, 2010
I expected Ning to close it when they went to pay-to-play. After all, their site says: Deadline for Selecting a Ning Plan Has Passed. We are no longer offering or supporting free Ning Networks. If you haven’t selected a plan for your free Ning Network, you can no longer access the network. To regain access, please visit www.ning.com, sign-in and then click “Select a Plan for your Ning Network.
Free Ning Applications
SEPTEMBER 10, 2009
Today, Ning made a bunch of free apps available for download. I have added five of them (Ning’s limit) to the Internet Time Community to assess how they work. Since the top menu of a Ning community is limited to 14 items, I collapsed some links into sub-categories.
Ning cancels “free”
APRIL 15, 2010
Big news today from Ning: no more free networks (and 40% staff layoffs). Many educators use Ning for creating social networks. But, for Ning, ad revenue has not been able to meet their financial needs. Hosted services are great – as long as you can pull your data out (a significant value to Google’s data liberation project).
Transferring from Ning to Grou.ps
Jay Cross's Informal Learning
AUGUST 10, 2010
The Internet Time Community has been hosted on Ning for a little over three years. I was shocked and saddened when Ning announced that its free service was ending. Lots of non-profits had signed up on Ning. The way Ning handled things left a bad taste in my mouth.
NING Alternatives via Stephen Downes
APRIL 17, 2010
I don’t normally wholly post others blog posts, but I think spreading the word about alternatives to NING , which will be ending its free service, is a useful thing. I had collected a few more, but I’ll add them to the Alternatives to Ning GoogleDoc! Today has been an active day in the community as people consider alternatives to Ning. An Alternatives to Ning. Wired says simply , “Ning fails at free social networking.
Join us: Stanford Learning Analytics Summer Institute
JUNE 27, 2013
Join the LASI Ning. While MOOCs are sucking all of the oxygen out of the educational technology conversation, significant trends are developing under the radar. One of the most significant trends is around learning analytics. Next week, we ( SoLAR , IEDMS and others) are organizing a Learning Analytics Summer Institute (LASI). A call for attendance was held earlier this year and the event was/is (massively) oversubscribed.

Lessons from an early MOOC
DECEMBER 9, 2013
note that the platform we used, Ning, began charging for service in 2010, so the resource is no longer available]. As Ning was shutting down its free service, I tried to capture some of the resources we had created, like the Introduction to Social Networking.

It also has two cameras attached: one for scanning the tabletop and through custom image recognition software determine the exact position and rotation of books; one for making high-resolution scans of pages, notes or objects not yet in the Sitterwerk catalogue.
More on GROU.PS
OCTOBER 30, 2010
LOL, just look at their Ning migration page ([link] IT’S STILL PROMISING FREE!!!, as an alternative to Ning, so I’d like to get to the bottom of this. A few days ago, I posted on Disservice from GROU.PS, giving me a deadline for upgrading from plan .
Enterprise 2.0 Conference: it’s about people to people
JUNE 24, 2011
They might not be the same type of community one finds at Slideshare, or Ning, or Amazon, and so on, but there are definitely communities in play in the work world. As I was taking in the keynotes of the Enterprise 2.0
1st update on 10 Tools Challenge 2013
JANUARY 17, 2013
22- Edmodo 85- Buddypress 63- Ning. It has been good to see the varied interest in the 10 Tools Challenge both on my blog and Twitter as well as on other social channels – so here are a few updates.
Learning Trends Starts Monday
NOVEMBER 15, 2008
There is a ning group for it: LearnTrends Ning Community. And Ning's time converter does not work. There will be some interesting discussions going on in the Ning group based on the presentations. Just a quick reminder that LearnTrends - Corporate Learning Trends and Innovations - starts on Monday. You can find the Schedule of Sessions. Be careful that all times are Pacific Time.
GovLoop.the Social Network for Govt 2.0
NOVEMBER 18, 2008
I am noticing a hockey stick-like moment for ning lately - at least in my circles. A full-on ning site designed for: "gov't employee (fed/state/local), public policy student/professor, good gov't organization, gov't contractor with good intentions."
Forums vs. Social Networks?
SEPTEMBER 15, 2008
Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. I'm debating the value of forum / group / threaded discussion software vs. social network software for a particular situation. It aims at a very broad audience that includes everyone from early adopters to technology laggards.
Seven Things I Learned This Year
DECEMBER 14, 2010
Over the past few years, I spend part of December going back through my blog to recap a bit of what some of the key things I’ve learned over the course of the year. I’ve been doing this the past few years, for example: Learned about Learning in 2009. And every year I use this as a Big Question – see: Learning 2010. A lot of it is thinking through where my thinking has changed over the course of the year. So here are a few of the things that are a bit different for me.
Introduction to Social Networking
JUNE 21, 2010
As our Work Literacy Ning site (2008) is in danger of getting bumped off the Net due to Ning’s new pricing policy , I will post some of the key articles here so we don’t lose them. There are several different online social networks, but for our purposes, we’ll focus on the three that tend to be used the most by learning professionals–Facebook, LinkedIn and Ning. As a learning professional, you will want to think of Ning in two ways.
MAY 4, 2010
This is the email I received today: Hi Ning Network Creator! As you may have already heard, we’re going to be making some big changes at Ning over the course of the next two months. As members of the Strategic Relationships team, we wanted to send you a personal introduction and let you know that we’ll be here over the coming months to discuss these company changes with you and help you transition seamlessly into an offering that works for you and your Ning Network.
Web 2.0 for Learning Professionals - Free Online Event
SEPTEMBER 24, 2008
To sign-up, go to the Ning group I've announced this already - Free - Web 2.0 for Learning Professionals and the response is great already - it looks like we are going to have quite a mix of people involved.
A linchpin culture
JANUARY 26, 2010
Henry Ford or even David Geffen… feed the machine, keep it running smoothly, pay as little as you can, make as much as you can. Here is Seth Godin being interviewed by Hugh Macleod : In a stable environment, we worship the efficient factory.

However, after the Ning experience, it’s difficult to trust a newcomer that doesn’t have a way for data export. Udemy has launched as a virtual learning academy. I set up an account (fairly painless) and started playing around with their synchronous classroom tool. First impression – nothing very new here, but the tools work well. If teachers start to use Udemy, lock-in will eventually become the economic value point for the company.
Beta, data and more
APRIL 2, 2010
— @courosa “ Ning Exposed – Tech Company Scams its Clients . Is Ning a scam? There’s a theory that Ning’s actions are part of a carefully planned scam to make the company the next MySpace or Facebook. This reminds me how important it is to own your data , and the following show two open source options to Ning’s Software as a Service (SaaS) platform: @elggdotcom “there is a hosted version of Elgg coming in May.
DECEMBER 22, 2010
The Ning site it was hosted on had changed its terms of service so I posted a copy of an Introduction to Social Networking (June) on this site. It got more attention here than on the Ning site.
APRIL 20, 2008
And switching again, the cover story in the current Fast Company is about ning. Ning’s software is another agile dancing bear. Essentially, a community-in-a-box, Ning is a snap to set up.
Webheads in Action Online unConvergence
MAY 21, 2009
Participation is FREE, but they encourage people to register on their Ning site. Webheads in Action announces their WiAOC 2009: Webheads in Action Online unConvergence, May 22-24, 2009. I’m not sure what an unConvergence is… I was kind of hopeing we’d have moments of convergence, but divergence is also good, eh? I’ll be on (via Elluminate) tomorrow, Friday, May 22 at 15:00 GMT (that’s 8am PDT) talking about technology stewardship. (I’ll
DECEMBER 16, 2008
Using SharePoint for Event Planning & Organizing Just like we used a Wiki one year and Ning another to support the online conference LearnTrends , SharePoint can be used to manage all types of events, especially internal events. I've been having fabulous conversations about using SharePoint.
Elgg: it’s a community effort
MARCH 29, 2010
This weekend I noticed a tweet from Alec Couros about some issues with the Ning social networking platform. That post is over a year old but from the comments as late as last fall, there seem to be ongoing issues on how Ning treats its customers, users and their data. While Ning may be free, it is not open source, and the company can make changes at will, just like Facebook, Google or Twitter may do. With Ning, Facebook and many others, there is no such export function.
Social Media and Learning: Implications
JUNE 24, 2010
I’m continuing on my theme of capturing what we learned during our Work Literacy online workshop in 2008, before Ning pulls the plug on us. Previous posts have discussed several aspects of what we learned and I’d like to review some of the summative commentary. What questions still linger? Jason Willensky – “Will we be forced to chase hot tools and social platforms to stay competitive… is this an ever-expanding universe of tech goodies?
Searching for Expertise - LinkedIn Answers
SEPTEMBER 30, 2008
Just yesterday (after having joined this ning as my first ning ever) I found a ning on the topic of Moodle, and I posted my question there. Yesterday I created a screen cast on LinkedIn for Finding Expertise. Today, I saw a post on our Free - Web 2.0 for Learning Professionals where someone said: I am currently trying to find a SME experienced with Moodle (a CMS/LMS) and WizIQ (synchronous web class technology).
Selecting OS learning technology platforms
JANUARY 28, 2009
you could also say ‘a wordpress.com project, a moodle hosted project or a ning project if you don’t care about controlling your data… which I do… but you may not). I would add Elgg to mix if there is an interest in the functionality of Ning, but with the advantage of open source. Dave Cormier has written a great article on selecting a content management system (CMS). Dave discusses three platforms, all of which I have used - WordPress , Moodle , Drupal.
Web 3.0: It Should Be About Transferrable Identity
OCTOBER 4, 2010
I have to, sadly, provide my details into various Ning sites, iTunes/Ping, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, MSN, YouTube, Air Canada, British Airways, and just about every other Web 2.0 A well-established research firm recently asked for my thoughts on Web 3.0.

Asynchronous Discussion I personally have found that Ning works great as a tool for all sorts of different needs. Creating a new Ning network is very easy and it gives you a lot of what you would want / need as a work team.
What tools should we learn?
JUNE 1, 2010
— Tony also asked that suggested resources be provided, so here are some, copied from our Work Literacy Ning site (2008), that is in danger of getting bumped off the Net due to Ning’s new pricing policy.
DIY is here
JUNE 29, 2010
Ning was wildly popular as a DIY online community builder, but that business model did not seem to work. Open source Elgg may replace Ning with a non locked-in platform, but its success remains to be seen. Over three years ago I wrote that the future of learning is DIY : With Google you can find most information that you need. YouTube is a quick and easy way to get “learning objects” to the world. Apple gives the essential tools for knowledge workers, and in a nice package.
The leaking pyramid

Social networking is getting more pervasive (Facebook, Twitter or DIY with Ning) and accepted in the mainstream, such as Linked-In for recruiting.
Social or Community?
NOVEMBER 20, 2008
most Ning communities) but can be much more dynamic. Fred Cavazza raises an interesting point on the difference between social and community platforms.
How To Get Started Thinking About Online Peer Learning Communities for Nonprofit Professionals

Learning Communities List
NOVEMBER 21, 2008
As we are wrapping up the week for Learn Trends , one of the questions we faced was what to do with the Ning community that sprung up to support the conference. Large, active Ning community hosted by Elliot Masie with monthly questions that spark discussions. Chief Learning Officer Network - Fairly active Ning community that has broad range of topics.
